Wolfgang Hinze (born June 23, 1921 in Dresden ; † April 3, 1988 in Magdeburg ) was a German mechanical engineer and professor of piston engines . In addition, he was founding director of the Institute for Piston Machines, dean of the Faculty of Chemistry and Energy and founding director of the Diesel Engines, Pumps and Compressors section at the Otto-von-Guericke Technical University in Magdeburg .

Live and act

Wolfgang Franz Leopold Hinze was born as the son of a teacher and passed his Abitur in 1939 at the Gymnasium zum Heiligen Kreuz (Kreuzschule) in Dresden. After six months of working hours and a six-month internship at the cigarette machine factory Universelle Dresden , Hinze began studying mechanical engineering at the TH Dresden in the second trimester of 1940 . In 1941 he was drafted into military service by the Wehrmacht and in 1943 dismissed as a severely disabled person. He then continued his studies and graduated in 1946 as a graduate engineer . During his studies in May 1945, Hinze made himself available for the voluntary and unpaid reconstruction of the TH Dresden, and until 1946 he did the assistant business in the institute for fluid flow machines there.

In a subsequent industrial activity (1946–1948) in the Dresden engineering office of FE Mittag, Hinze worked on the development and construction of small water turbines . In 1948 he took up a position as a scientific assistant and later as a senior assistant at the TH Dresden at the Institute for Internal Combustion Engines (until 1952 the only assistant). During this time, his area of responsibility related to the rebuilding of teaching and training as well as the experimental system. He also worked on his dissertation .

1955 doctorate Hinze for Doctor of Engineering at the Technical University Dresden. In 1956 he was given a professorship at the Magdeburg University of Heavy Mechanical Engineering with the aim of founding, developing and managing an institute for piston machines . Despite great initial difficulties, he succeeded in giving the institute a profile both in the field of teaching and research. He put down his scientific results from this time in a paper and qualified as a Dr.-Ing. habil. at the TU Dresden.

1963 he was appointed Specialization Director of the newly formed Department of engines and machines. He was also appointed dean of the newly founded Faculty of Chemistry and Energy in 1964 and was appointed founding director of the Diesel Engines, Pumps and Compressors section in 1968 .

Hinze's teaching activities included the fields of thermodynamics , piston engines and internal combustion engines , whereby the students said he had a clear style of presentation and a pedagogical skill.

In his research, Hinze also endeavored to incorporate the modern methods of measurement and control technology for the specifics of combustion engines. For this purpose, an interdisciplinary cooperation was established with Siegfried Rudert's professorship in the technical cybernetics and electrical engineering section , whose research focus was on the modeling and control of diesel engines and process analysis for control systems .

Hinze worked nationally in the Central Working Group (ZAK) "Combustion Engines" and after its dissolution in 1967 in the Scientific-Technical Advisory Board "Diesel Engines". He was named the People's Honored Technician in 1968 . In 1986 he retired due to age.
