Wolfgang Horn (horticultural scientist)

Wolfgang Horn (born October 5, 1925 in Braunschweig ; † September 6, 2018 in Freising ) was a German horticultural scientist , ornamental plant breeder and university professor.

Live and act

Horn graduated from a humanistic grammar school in his hometown Braunschweig, then had to serve two years in World War II , was wounded and was taken prisoner. After an apprenticeship as a gardener, he studied horticulture at the Technical Universities of Hanover and Berlin . He then did his doctorate at the TU Berlin at the Institute for Heredity and Breeding Research (Prof. Hans Kappert) as Dr. agr. From 1956 to 1962 he was research assistant in Stellenbosch (South Africa) and dealt with the use of wild species for the breeding of ornamental plants.

In 1964 he qualified as a professor at the Technical University of Hanover for applied genetics and received an extraordinary professorship here in 1967. In 1977 he was appointed full professor to the chair for ornamental plant cultivation with the field of horticultural plant breeding at the Technical University of Munich-Weihenstephan (TUM) in Freising. He carried out this task until his retirement in 1992. Afterwards he continued to work in research, teaching and through scientific publications.

Honorary positions

Horn was the long-time editor of the journal "Pflanzenzüchtung" (later Plant Breeding ), was involved in international projects, scientific societies and in committees of the Technical University of Munich, here also as dean of the then Faculty of Agriculture and Horticulture. After the political change , he influenced the reorganization of horticultural research in the new federal states .

Honors

In recognition of his outstanding achievements, Wolfgang Horn received an honorary doctorate from the horticultural department of the University of Hanover on January 28, 2000 .

Appreciation

Horn dealt with mostly with

  • horticultural plant breeding (especially for ornamental plants),
  • applied plant physiology and
  • the culture of plant tissues.

This also earned him international recognition. Many of his breeding successes found their way into practice. As an author and publisher, he set new standards in his field.
