Wolfgang Kahrs (born January 17, 1933 in Bremen ) is a German lawyer and politician ( SPD ).

Family, education and work

Kahrs studied economics and law in Bonn and Berlin . Subsequently, he settled in his hometown as a lawyer .

After his tenure as a senator, he worked as a lawyer. He was involved in the German Gymnastics Federation .

Kahrs was married to the future Senator for Education, Bringfriede Kahrs . Their son, Johannes Kahrs (SPD), was a member of the German Bundestag for Hamburg from 1998 to 2020 .

Kahrs is a member of the SPD in Bremen-Nord. From 1967 to 1971 he was a member of the Bremen citizenship for the SPD .

From 1971 to 1987 he served in the Senate of Hans Koschnick and the first Senate of Klaus Wedemeier as Bremen's Justice Senator and from 1983 to 1987 also as Senator for Federal Affairs . Kahrs implemented a modern penal system in Bremen, which aims to rehabilitate the offender. Kahrs campaigned for free legal advice from the Chamber of Employees on behalf of the Free Hanseatic City of Bremen . Furthermore, during his tenure as Senator for Justice in Bremen, the one-stage legal training was introduced.

From 1987 to 1995 he was again a member of the citizenship, and since 1991 also as chairman of the citizenship audit committee.
