Ulrich Graf (politician, 1912)

Ulrich Graf (born December 17, 1912 in Nakel an der Netze , Province of Posen , † April 4, 2006 in Worpswede ) was a German lawyer and politician ( FDP ).

Life

Graf was the son of an official in Nakel an der Net. After graduating from high school, he studied law, political science and economics at the Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität zu Berlin and the Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg from 1931 to 1935 , which he completed with the first state legal examination and in 1936 with a doctorate in Erlangen Dr. jur. completed. He then switched to industry and worked at AEG in Bremen . On May 1, 1937, he joined the NSDAP ( membership number 5,886,474). From 1939 to 1945 he took part in the Second World War as a soldier .

Graf had since 1945 Managing Director of the craft department of Bremen Chamber of Commerce , in 1947 Managing Director of the Chamber of Crafts Bremen and served later as its chief executive. In this function he wrote the commemorative publication 100 Years of Bremen Chamber of Crafts 1849–1949.

Graf also worked as president of the Carl Schurz Society, founded in 1949 to promote German-American friendship, and as chairman of the Worpswede Foundation. From 1975 to 1989 he was a member and chairman of the tourist association. He was also a hobby painter.

Graf joined the FDP in 1951 and was a member of the Bremen citizenship from 1951 to 1959 . From December 21, 1959, he worked as Senator for Justice and the Constitution of the Free Hanseatic City of Bremen , an office he held until his resignation in June 1971. On November 26, 1963, he also took over the newly created department for church affairs. During his tenure as senator, he implemented a reform of the judiciary and the prison system in particular and was committed to founding the University of Bremen . The FDP senators Graf, Georg Borttscheller and Rolf Speckmann resigned on June 1, 1971, because they no longer wanted to be responsible for the development of the reform university in Bremen and the appointment of left-wing professors.

After the senatorial period, Graf was again a member of the Bremen citizenship from 1971 to 1975 and also state chairman of the Bremen FDP from 1968 to 1974. As such, he was also a member of the FDP federal executive committee .

Graf had been married to Helga Oetjen for the second time since 1970.
