Knust was used from the 15th game on and played seven games in a row before he was replaced by future goalkeeper Günter Melchior . Then Knust was only a substitute goalkeeper, until 1958 he was only 17 times in point games in the goal of the 1st team of SC Chemistry. In addition, he completed eight games in the second-rate GDR league in 1956 (change to the calendar year rhythm) , since the Halle residents were relegated in 1955. By the summer of 1958, Knust played most of his games with the SC Chemie reserve team. In June 1958 SC Chemie Halle-Leuna merged with SC Wissenschaft Halle and then appeared as SC Chemie Halle. The GDR league team of SC Wissenschaft became the 2nd team of SC Chemie and was reinforced by several SC Chemie players, including goalkeeper Knust, who remained a substitute goalkeeper. Since the first team was relegated again after the 1958 season, the SC Chemie II had to compete in the third-class II. DDR league in 1959 , the team was returned to the HSG Wissenschaft. Knust stayed there until the end of the 1960 season, after which he ended his career as a competitive athlete.

As early as 1939 he had joined the club FC Grün-Weiß Piesteritz , at that time still TSB (gymnastics and sports club) and later BSG Chemie Piesteritz. After his time at SC Chemie Halle-Leuna, he took an active part in club life, in the traditional team and as a trainer. After a heart attack in 1990, he ended his active football career and remained loyal to the club. In 2004, FC Grün-Weiß voted Wolfgang Knust into the “Eleven of the Century”.
