Wolfgang Kromp (physicist)

Wolfgang Kromp (born August 31, 1942 in Schönberg am Kamp , Lower Austria ) is an Austrian physicist.

Life

Study of physics and mathematics at the University of Vienna , doctorate in 1970 after a dissertation on the topic of recovery of electrical resistance after ultrasound radiation . From 1970 university assistant with subsequent research stays at the Max Planck Institute Stuttgart / Büsnau and at Carnegie - Mellon University, Department of Mechanical Engineering in Pittsburgh / Pennsylvania.

1984 Habilitation in material physics at the natural science faculty of the University of Vienna. 1997 appointment as associate professor.

With his public appearances and publications, Wolfgang Kromp made a significant contribution to the rejection of the use of nuclear power in Austria on the occasion of the 1978 referendum.

From 1990 until today he was a member of the Forum for Atomic Questions (FAF), which was founded at the same time. Its task is to advise the Austrian Federal Government on all questions of atomic energy and ionizing radiation that require coordinating treatment (Federal Law Gazette No. 234/1990).

At the end of 1991, at the instigation of Wolfgang Kromp, the then rector Alfred Ebenbauer founded an interdisciplinary project "Nuclear Safety" at the University of Vienna against the will of the then Minister of Science Erhard Busek Designation Institute for Safety and Risk Sciences (ISR) at the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences Vienna (BOKU). Wolfgang Kromp acted as head of these facilities until 2012. The main research areas are nuclear risks, risks of renewable energy and technology assessment.

Since 2002 he has been advising the City of Vienna on issues relating to nuclear safety through a cooperation with the Vienna Environmental Ombudsman.

Wolfgang Kromp is married to the climate researcher Helga Kromp-Kolb for the second time .
