Wolfgang Promies (born January 4, 1935 in Magdeburg , † January 25, 2002 in Darmstadt ) was a German specialist in German . He was an important Lichtenberg researcher.

Life

Promies, the son of a judicial officer, studied German, art history, theater studies, history and psychology at the universities of Göttingen , Tübingen , Vienna and Munich from 1954 . In 1962 he received his doctorate in Munich. Dissertation title: The Citizens and the Fool or The Risk of the Imagination. An Inquiry into the Irrational in the Literature of Rationalism . He then worked as a lecturer at various universities in Spain and France. From 1964 to 1969 he was a publisher's editor at Luchterhand-Verlag . In 1972 Promies completed his habilitation at the Technical University of Hanover . He first became a professor at the University of Oldenburg , then in 1979 a full professor at the Technical University of Darmstadt . In 1977 Promies was one of the founders of the Lichtenberg Society in Ober-Ramstadt , which he chaired for over two decades until 1999. He was then appointed honorary chairman of the company.

Promies devoted himself to the life and work of Georg Christoph Lichtenberg in numerous publications. He was also the editor of the complete edition of Lichtenberg's Sudel books, which is still relevant today, and the founder of the Lichtenberg yearbook.

Promies also translated from French and Spanish , including works by Julio Cortázar , Miguel Angel Asturias and Charles-Albert Cingria .
