Wolfgang René Hess
Wolfgang René Hess (born February 8, 1961 in Berlin ) is a German professor of genetics and experimental bioinformatics at the Faculty of Biology at the Albert Ludwig University of Freiburg .
biography
Wolfgang R. Hess studied biology at the University of Rostock and at the Humboldt University of Berlin from 1982 to 1987 , where he received his doctorate in 1990 with the thesis on the expression of light- and tissue-specific regulated genes of higher plants . After a post-doc period in 1993/1994 at the CNRS Institute for Marine Biology in Roscoff, France, he completed his habilitation in 1999 at the Humboldt University. After four years as a senior research assistant at Humboldt University, he moved to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 2000 and in 2003 became the founding director of the Ocean Genome Legacy Foundation, a privately funded genome research foundation of the biotechnology company New England Biolabs. In 2004 he moved to the University of Freiburg as Professor of Experimental Bioinformatics , where he still researches and teaches today.
Hess is the spokesman for the Freiburg FORSYS (Systems Biology Research Units ) research center FRISYS .
research
The working group of Professor Hess deals with questions of functional genome analysis in the areas of photosynthesis and the control of transcription and RNA processing in prokaryotic organisms ( bacteria ). One focus is on the group of cyanobacteria . These studies are supplemented by studies on the genetic systems of the chloroplasts and mitochondria , especially barley ( Hordeum vulgare L. ). The results of these investigations have found their way into 60 publications.
As founding director of the Ocean Genome Legacy Foundation in Boston from 2003 to 2004, Hess made a significant contribution to the strategy of this new research facility in the field of marine microbiology and genomics of marine organisms as a whole. As a professor of experimental bioinformatics, he and his working group have been working increasingly on the post-genomic analysis of prokaryotic organisms since 2004. There is a strong interest in applying the methods developed on model organisms on a large scale to prokaryotes relevant to medicine , biotechnology and the environment . An increasingly important aspect in this context is the use of systems biological approaches and methods.
