from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Thomas Börner (* 11. July 1946 in Leipzig ) is a German plant geneticist with the emphasis genomes of chloroplasts and mitochondria . He has also been studying cyanobacteria since the 1980s .

Life

After studying biology at the Martin Luther University in Halle (Saale) from 1965 to 1969, he received his doctorate there in 1974 under Rudolf Hagemann on the effects of mutations in the DNA of chloroplasts in pelargoniums . His habilitation in 1979, also at the Martin Luther University, dealt with chloroplast biogenesis of Pelargonium zonale and barley . In 1982 he moved to the Humboldt University in Berlin as a full lecturer in genetics in the biology section, became full professor there in 1984 and held a C4 professorship for genetics from 1993 to 2012 . He has been Professor Emeritus since 2012 .

From 1991 to 1996 Thomas Börner was Vice President of the Society for Genetics . He was also the spokesman for the Collaborative Research Center 429 (“ Molecular Physiology , Energetics and Regulation of Primary Plant Metabolic Processes”, 1999–2010) of the German Research Foundation (DFG).

Thomas Börner contributed significantly to the discovery and characterization of phytochromes in bacteria as well as the non-ribosomal peptide synthesis in cyanobacteria.
