Wolfgang Schäfer (born April 7, 1945 in Staufen im Breisgau ) is a German choir director and professor of choir conducting.

biography

Wolfgang Schäfer studied school music, singing and choral conducting in Freiburg im Breisgau , as well as orchestral conducting at the Stuttgart University of Music and Performing Arts . From 1971 to 1982 he taught at the University of Music Freiburg this, from 1982 to 2008 he was professor of choral conducting at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Frankfurt am Main (HfMDK) from 1982 to 1997 successor to Kurt Thomas and Helmuth Rilling also Conductor of the Frankfurter Kantorei . In 1971 he founded the Freiburg Vocal Ensemble; since 2008 he has also directed the newly founded Frankfurter Kammerchor, which mainly consists of university graduates. In 2015 he was the interim successor of the late Hans Michael Beuerle in the direction of the Freiburg Bach Choir . Wolfgang Schäfer is also the artistic director of the annual festival and choir seminar “Staufen Music Week”; In addition, he is internationally active as a guest conductor, juror and lecturer.
