Cristóbal de Morales

Cristóbal de Morales (* around 1500 in Seville (?); † between September 4 and October 7, 1553 in Marchena (?)) Was a Spanish composer . He is considered the first major Spanish composer of the Renaissance .

Life

There is no reliable information about its origin. The previously assumed date of birth January 2, 1512 is likely to be incorrect. He possibly received his musical training as a choir boy at Seville Cathedral . Cristóbal de Morales received his first employment as Kapellmeister in 1526 in Ávila and in 1529 in Plasencia . In 1535 he became a singer in the Sistine Chapel and lived and worked at the time of the pontificate of Paul III. In Rome for 10 years. At that time he was ennobled by the Pope. In 1540/41 Morales interrupted his service in Rome for about a year and returned to Spain. In the second phase of his service as papal singer, illness-related absences increased, as Morales probably suffered from severe gout . In 1545 he finally finished his service in Rome and returned to his Spanish homeland, where he worked as Kapellmeister at the Cathedral of Toledo . In 1551 he became conductor at the Cathedral of Málaga , but soon had to give up the activity for health reasons. In September 1553 he applied again to Toledo, but he must have died shortly afterwards, as the cathedral chapter of Malaga on October 7th offered the house he had previously lived in for rent.

Many of his compositions appeared in print during his lifetime, which was quite unusual at the time.
