Wolfgang Schneider (psychologist)

Wolfgang Schneider (born June 19, 1950 in Völklingen / Saar) is a German psychologist and former professor of educational psychology and developmental psychology at the University of Würzburg .

Career

After graduating from high school , Wolfgang Schneider studied psychology, theology and philosophy in Wuppertal and Heidelberg . In 1975 he obtained a diploma in psychology in Heidelberg . He then worked as a research assistant or research assistant at the University of Heidelberg. In June 1979 he received his doctorate from the Faculty of Economics and Social Sciences at the University of Heidelberg. A research stay at Stanford University (USA) followed (1981–1982 ). From 1982 to 1991 he was a research associate at the Max Planck Institute for Psychological Research, Munich.

In 1988 he completed his habilitation in psychology at the LMU Munich . From 1991 to 2016 he held the Chair of Psychology IV (Educational Psychology and Developmental Psychology) at the University of Würzburg. Since April 2016 he has been employed as a senior professor at the University of Würzburg.

In 1991 he was the founding representative for psychology at the Erfurt / Mühlhausen University of Education . In the following year he was elected Vice Dean of the Philosophical Faculty III of the University of Würzburg; a year later he was also the managing director of the Institute for Psychology, member of the training commission within the German Society for Psychology and spokesman for the specialist group developmental psychology in the same society.

In 1996 he became dean of the Philosophical Faculty III of the University of Würzburg and in 1998 a member of the Senate . From 2004 to 2009 he was Vice President of the University of Würzburg. In this position he initiated in 2004 together with the mathematician Dr. Richard Greiner established early studies for high school students at the University of Würzburg. From 2004 to 2019 he was the founding director of the gifted psychological counseling center at the university. From 2009 to 2011 he was dean of the Philosophical Faculty II at the University of Würzburg. Since 2013 he has been Honorary Professor at the School of Education, Durham University, United Kingdom.

He was elected the first Vice President of the German Society for Psychology (DGPs) in 2000, and he was President of the DGPs from 2002 to 2004. From 2010 to 2014 he was President of the International Society for the Study of Behavioral Development (ISSBD), then from 2014 to 2016 Past President of the ISSBD. He has been a Fellow of the ISSBD since 2016.

From 1998 to 2001 and from 2007 to 2010 he was a member of the National Consortium and the International Expert Group Reading of the OECD-PISA study, and from 2008 to 2013 he was a member of the scientific advisory board of the Federal Ministry for Family, Seniors, Women and Youth. From 2004 to 2019 he was a member of the Board of Trustees of the Karg Foundation.

In 2002 he was elected a member of the Leopoldina . In 2012 Schneider received the Franz Emanuel Weinert Prize from the German Society for Psychology . In 2014 he was awarded the advancement award of the scientific advisory board of the LOS institutes for his life's work.

In May 2018 he was awarded the gold medal "bene merenti" (also: Benemerenti ; papal merit medal) at the university's foundation festival .

His main research interests lie in the areas of educational psychology, educational-psychological diagnostics and developmental psychology:

  • Reading and spelling research
  • early promotion of school skills
  • of reading and learning research
  • the development of memory and metacognition in children and adolescents
  • Media psychology
  • and research into giftedness and expertise
  • Influence of television on the development of language and reading skills
  • motor development in childhood and adolescence

Beyond the academic field, he became known primarily for his participation in preschool prevention programs, which were widely used in practice. As co-editor and author of the series German School Tests at Hogrefe, he was and is significantly involved in the development of educational and psychological test procedures for the school sector.
