Wolfgang Vater (table tennis player)

Wolfgang Vater (born November 23, 1949 ) is a former German table tennis player . He was multiple GDR champion in doubles.

Career

Father began playing table tennis in Heide, a part of the Lausitz community of Wiednitz . In 1965 he became Central German youth champion. In the same year he drew attention to himself at the GDR senior championship with victories over Lotar Schleener and the fourth in the GDR rankings Dieter Schindler . He later moved to SC Leipzig. An international highlight was his participation in the European Youth Championships in 1966, where he reached the quarter-finals in singles and third in doubles with Manfred Ullrich and with the team.

At the GDR championships he won the doubles title four times with Siegfried Lemke , namely in 1968, 1970, 1971 and 1972. In 1976, he was second with Siegmar Bessert. In 1968 he reached the final in mixed with Petra Stephan . He won the GDR team championship in 1966 and 1967 with BSG Lokomotive Leipzig-Mitte and in 1976 with BSG Stahl Finow.

Father's greatest international success was reaching the double quarter-finals at the 1967 World Cup , where he lost at the side of Siegfried Lemke against the Japanese Nobuhiko Hasegawa / Mitsuru Kōno . As a result of the competitive sports decision in 1969, when table tennis was classified as not worthy of funding, father's international career ended. He then joined the BSG Stahl Finow and began studying sociology at the Humboldt University in Berlin .

Private

Father is married and has three children. His son Christian became German team champion with TTC Finow in 1999 among the pupils.
