Wolfgang Viöl
Wolfgang Viöl (born September 19, 1959 in Düsseldorf ) is a German physicist and university lecturer .
Life
Wolfgang Viöl studied physics at the Heinrich Heine University in Düsseldorf from 1979 . His diploma topic was the detection of the atomic particle concentration in a pulsed oxygen discharge with the help of resonance fluorescence .
During his doctorate, Wolfgang Viöl worked as a research assistant in the field of high-performance CO₂ lasers at the Institute for Laser and Plasma Physics at the University of Düsseldorf under Jürgen Uhlenbusch . He completed his dissertation with summa cum laude .
After completing his doctoral thesis, Viöl worked as a research assistant at the Laser and Plasma Institute at the University of Düsseldorf until 1994. In 1994 Viöl completed his habilitation at the Heinrich Heine University in Düsseldorf in the field of experimental physics , whereupon he worked as a private lecturer at the University of Düsseldorf until 2001.
In 1994 he followed a call to the PMF (physics, measurement and precision engineering) department (today the Faculty of Science and Technology) at the Göttingen site of the Hildesheim / Holzminden / Göttingen University of Applied Sciences (now HAWK). Here he teaches, among other things, the subjects of laser material processing and plasma technology . In 2001 Viöl accepted a teaching position at the TU Clausthal in addition to his teaching activity in Göttingen . Here he initially worked as a private lecturer until he was granted the status of extraordinary professor in 2011. In addition to his teaching activities, Wolfgang Viöl built up a network of industrial partners and research institutes. In 2002, this initially led to his work as head of the Institute for Mechatronics and Applied Photonics at N-transfer GmbH.
In 2004 Viöl received the cooperation award of the State of Lower Saxony, three years later the Lower Saxony Science Award.
From 2008 to 2010 he was director of the Laser Laboratory in Göttingen. Since 2011 he has been Vice President for Research and Transfer of the HAWK, and Chairman of Measurement Valley ev. In the following year, he and his team succeeded in bringing the Fraunhofer IST-APP to the HAWK location in Göttingen, which he also took over management.
By 2018 Viöl had around 250 scientific publications, well over 100 patents and 375 specialist lectures at home and abroad.
Wolfgang Viöl is married and has four children.
