Wolfgang Wiefel

Wolfgang Wiefel (born February 20, 1929 in Oschersleben , † October 23, 1998 in Halle (Saale) ) was a German Protestant theologian of New Testament science. From 1963 he was a lecturer at the University of Halle and from 1984 to 1992 at the Theological Seminary in Leipzig .

Life

Wiefel passed his Abitur in 1947 and received a one-year teacher training course in Magdeburg . From 1948 to 1951 he worked as a primary school teacher in his hometown Oschersleben. From the winter semester of 1951 he studied theology at the Church University in Berlin-Zehlendorf and at the Sprachkonvikt in Berlin . In 1956, Wiefel passed the first theological exam and was released as an aspirant. During this time he worked on his doctorate and habilitation . In 1959 he received his doctorate at the Theological Seminary in Leipzig under Johannes Leipoldt with the thesis on The Synagogue Service in the New Testament Age and its influence on the emerging Christian service. His habilitation took place in Leipzig in 1963 with the work The Beginnings of the Christian Apprenticeship Year in the Light of Comparative Religious History.

In 1963, Wiefel became a lecturer in the New Testament and general history of religion at the theological faculty of the University of Halle, where he was appointed associate professor for the New Testament in 1975 . In 1984 Wiefel accepted the call to the theological seminary in Leipzig . He received the chair for the New Testament, which he held until his retirement in 1992.

In addition to his academic work, Wiefel had also continued his church education. In January 1964 he became vicar in the Johannes Congregation in Halle. He successfully passed his second theological exam in October 1965 before the consistory in Magdeburg. Just two months later, Wiefel was ordained in Magdeburg Cathedral . Later, too, as a lecturer in Halle and Leipzig, he worked as a preacher and pastor. In addition, Wiefel worked for many years in distance learning in the ecclesiastical province of Saxony and in the ecclesiastical examination office, to which he also belonged after his release as a professor. From 1975 to 1976 he worked on behalf of the Liturgical Conference of the Lutheran World Federation on the Pericope Revision project to review the previously valid lectionary and the sermon text series.

During the semester, Wiefel gave lectures on the entire area of ​​the New Testament, but also the history and literature of Judaism. His research and publications focused primarily on the New Testament, Judaic Studies, the old church and the history of theology, mainly New Testament research of the 19th and 20th centuries. His commentaries The Gospel according to Luke and The Gospel according to Matthew are considered standard works . A biography of the apostle Paul could no longer appear because the Union Verlag was dissolved.

Wolfgang Wiefel died on October 23, 1998 at the age of 69 in Halle. He was buried in the Laurentiusfriedhof .
