Wieser dealt with ecology (where he co-founded ecophysiology and examined the ecophysiology of freshwater fish and invertebrates in soils) and animal physiology (e.g. energy metabolism), with evolutionary biology and with general and current issues of biology. For example, he published a book on cybernetics and biology as early as 1959.

He was an honorary member of the German Zoological Society (2001). In 1976 he became a corresponding and in 1991 a full member of the Austrian Academy of Sciences .
