Wolfgang Wosolsobe (born August 7, 1955 in Vienna ; † September 21, 2018 ) was a lieutenant general in the Austrian Armed Forces . From 2007 to 2012 he was head of the Austrian military representation in Brussels , most recently in the rank of lieutenant general and from May 28, 2013 to May 2016, director general of the European Union military staff .

Life

Wolfgang Wosolsobe was born on August 7, 1955 in Vienna and, after graduating from the Theresian Academy Foundation's high school, joined the army in 1973. Following his officer training at the Theresian Military Academy , he was deployed as a lieutenant in 1977. After serving as platoon and company commander, he received a position as a training platoon commander at the Theresian Military Academy from 1980.

After his promotion to first lieutenant, Wolfgang Wosolsobe completed general staff training at the National Defense Academy from 1982 to 1985, and from 1986 to 1987 he was head of department in the Department of General Military Planning in the Ministry of Defense .

In 1987 he took part in the French general staff course as a major. From 1991 to 1992 he was transferred to the Austrian UN mission in Geneva as a military advisor and from 1992 to 1997 he was Colonel Defense Attaché in Paris . After this post he was in command of the Jagdkampf training center. In 1998 he was appointed deputy head of the military policy department in the Ministry of Defense. A year later he became head of this department and in 2001 he was promoted to brigadier.

From February 2006 Wolfgang Wosolsobe was entrusted with the management of the Directorate for Security Policy in the Ministry of Defense. He held this position until February 2007. Since 2007 he was head of the Austrian military representation in Brussels with the rank of major general.

On April 24, 2012, Wosolsobe was nominated for the post of Head of the Military Staff of the European Union to succeed Ton van Osch . The term of office began in late May 2013 and ended in 2016. In March 2013, he was promoted to lieutenant general.

Wolfgang Wosolsobe died on September 21, 2018.
