He scored his first league goal on April 28, 1963 in a 2-1 defeat at Motor Jena. He played four times this season, each time as a center forward. In 1963/64 he moved to the left wing position and came to 12 missions in 26 played point games. He came to the same number of missions in 1964/65 and played alternately right winger, center forward and left winger, but only scored four goals. Wruck made his breakthrough as a regular player in the 1965/66 season, when he was used in 18 league games and with eight goals, Rostock's top scorer, which was converted to FC Hansa Rostock during the season. After also constant performance in 1966/67 with 15 league appearances, Wruck suffered a setback in his career in 1967/68. After the first half of the season with only five league games hadn't gone optimally, he suffered a broken leg in January 1968, which later forced him to give up his league career. In the second half of the 1968/69 season Wruck played 13 point games in the second-rate GDR league for the second team of FC Hansa.

After 64 league games with 19 goals and four cup games (one goal) for the Rostock club, Wruck joined the GDR league team TSG Wismar for the 1969/70 season . There he was active for two seasons, in which he played 35 point games as a striker and scored seven goals. In the summer of 1971 he moved to the third-rate district division TSG Bau Rostock , with whom he was promoted to the GDR league two years later. As a second division player, Wruck was active at TSG from 1973 to 1978. There, too, he initially played in attack, moved to midfield in 1974 and was in TSG's defense from 1976. Within five seasons, Wruck completed 100 point games, a rate of 91%. On April 23, 1978 he played his last soccer game as a competitive athlete. It was the last league game of the 1977/78 season with the encounter Schiffahrt / Hafen Rostock - TSG Bau Rostock (2-0), in which he played again as a defender.

Wolfgang Wruck worked as a trainer well beyond the turn of the millennium. Most recently he was assistant trainer at Rostocker FC and since 2009 at SV Hafen Rostock .
