Football played a prominent role at BSG Schiffahrt / Hafen. The BSG was founded on October 27, 1961 with the sections football and handball. The carrier company was the VEB Seehafen Rostock, which was created in 1960 in connection with the construction of the Rostock overseas port. Sports such as fistball, bowling, volleyball, ice hockey, tennis, table tennis and sailing were added later. However, only the football players achieved a national level of awareness.

In 1968 the soccer team reached the Rostock district league for the first time , the 3rd division in GDR soccer, from which one is ranked 15th. initially descended again immediately. After immediate resurgence in 1970, after two finals against Empor Saßnitz (5: 0 and 1: 3), the Rostock district championship was won in 1972, and with it the first promotion to the second-rate GDR league , which was then achieved with the exception of the 1985/86 and 1987 seasons / 88 until the end of 1990. Responsible for this success were the ex-national players of FC Hansa Rostock Wolfgang Barthels and Herbert Pankau , who switched to Schiffahrt / Hafen after their high-performance careers and the Hansa oldie Kurt Zapf as coach.

With an upward trend recently, shipping / port became a fixture in the league and achieved the relay victory in the 1980/81 season. In the promotion round to the GDR Oberliga with the other four season winners, Rostock missed promotion with 4th place. In 1983 the procedure was repeated, but with the last place in the promotion round. In 1984 the team had reached a phase in which they had to do without top-class former league players and the loss of the team's now retired pillars such as Heinz Pinkohs, Peter Sykora and captain Gerhard Balandies had to be compensated. At the beginning of the 1984/85 season, the GDR league was also reduced from five to two seasons. All of this contributed to the fact that Schiffahrt / Hafen was third from bottom of the league season A at the end of the season and thus had to be relegated to the district league. Until 1988, the team commuted between the district and GDR leagues, only afterwards had it consolidated itself to such an extent that relegation in the GDR league could be secured until the GDR football game was over.

With the takeover of East German football by the DFB, the team, now appearing as SV Hafen 61 Rostock, was incorporated into the then third-class Oberliga Nordost for the 1991/92 season . In the meantime, the profound social and sporting changes had affected the team so much that they could not keep up. In the following five years, SV Hafen had to play in the Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania Association League, followed in 1997 by relegation to the sixth-class regional league . 2001 succeeded in returning to the association league, but after relegation in 2007, the team was then passed through to the eight-class district league (after the introduction of the 3rd league in 2008 only). It was not until 2010 that they were promoted to the now only 7th class state league.

Women's soccer

SV Hafen has had a women's soccer department since 2005. However, it has its origins as early as 1970 when a women's football section was founded at BSG Post Rostock . The development of women's football in Rostock was inextricably linked with the name Josef (Jupp) Pilz, who looked after the women's football for many years. During this time, the team also regularly took part in the best determinations in the GDR. In 1979 they came in third in the GDR best determination, behind Motor Mitte Karl-Marx-Stadt and Aufbau Dresden Ost. This tournament was attended by 3,100 spectators in Templin . In 1990 the BSG Post Rostock was the last GDR champion against Bismut Chemnitz .

After the turn, the team played in the Regionalliga Nordost. In 1992 the department joined FC Hansa Rostock . Just a year later she changed clubs again. Now she played for the police SV Rostock, which started the club's most successful period. In 1995 the women became champions of the Regionalliga Nordost and were promoted to the women's Bundesliga . But after a year they had to go down again. In the 2004/05 season, the team was relegated from the regional league and the department moved to SV Hafen Rostock. The team immediately became champions of the Mecklenburg-Vorpommern Association League and managed to get promoted again immediately in the promotion round. Since relegation from the Regionalliga in 2008, the team has played in the Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania Association League.
