Wolfram Kollatschny (born December 12, 1950 in Minden ) is a German astrophysicist .

Life

Kollatschny is the son of the judge Robert Kollatschny and his wife Ingeborg nee Lichterfeld. He attended elementary school in Hanover from 1957 to 1961 and then moved to the Ratsgymnasium Hanover, where he passed the Abitur in 1969. From 1969 to 1970 he did military service . He then studied physics and astronomy in Göttingen and completed his diploma thesis on fine analysis and NLTE calculations for the K5V star ε Indi (supervisor: Hans-Heinrich Voigt ) in 1979 , and in 1983 his dissertation on multi-frequency observations and model calculations for cores of active galaxies (supervisor: Klaus Fricke ). He then continued to work at the Göttingen University Observatory , where he completed his habilitation in 1991 and became professor in 1994 and director in 2006. He is a member of the Commission 28 Galaxies of the International Astronomical Union (IAU).

The work of Wolfram Kollatschny has contributed greatly to the understanding of the active galaxies , in which a super-heavy black hole is orbited by falling matter as an accretion disk and generates strong radiation. From the emission lines (especially of hydrogen and helium) their red shift and fluctuation of intensity and broadening he was able to obtain the order of magnitude of gravity, speeds and distances of 1–2 light months and 10 7 –10 8 solar masses, from the exact profile of different lines that too Verify model of an accretion disk instead of turbulence or radially incident matter. He found that the 4% active galaxies with multiple nuclei or long spiral arms are final phases of the collision of galaxies, both speeds are visible through shifted lines in the spectrum, and that the tidal forces of both galaxies are 1.5 to 2 times the brightness, cause high density of new stars and other non-thermal activity.
