Caripe is a town in the Oruro department in the highlands of the South American Andean state Bolivia .

Location in the vicinity

Caripe is a central place in the canton of Caripe , one of four cantons in the district ( Bolivian : Municipio ) Curahuara de Carangas in the province of Sajama . Caripe is located on the western edge of the Oruro department at an altitude of 4191  m, 25 kilometers from the Chilean border and 12 kilometers northeast of the Sajama , which is the highest mountain in Bolivia at 6,542 m. Caripe is located on the left bank of the Río Tomarapi , whose water comes from the Laguna Huana Kkota a few kilometers north of the Sajama, and which flows further south over the Río Cosapa into the Río Lauca and flows to the Salar de Coipasa .

Caripe is located on the Bolivian Altiplano on the eastern slopes of the Andes mountain range of the Cordillera Occidental . The region has a typical daytime climate in which the mean fluctuation in daytime temperatures is greater than the mean seasonal fluctuations.

The annual average temperature of the region is around 5 ° C, the annual precipitation is only around 200 mm (see climate diagram Tambo Quemado). The monthly average temperatures fluctuate only slightly between 1 ° C in June / July and a good 6 ° C from November to March. The monthly precipitation is below 10 mm from April to October and reaches its maximum in the months of December to March.

Transport network

Caripe is located at a distance of 219 kilometers by road west of Oruro , the capital of the department of the same name.

From Oruro, the unpaved road Ruta 31 leads west via La Joya to Curahuara de Carangas . She meets five kilometers north of Curahuara the Ruta 4 , consisting of the 96 km distant Patacamaya comes, a town on the Ruta 1 , midway between the government seat La Paz and Oruro. From Curahuara , the Ruta 4 leads 93 kilometers in a south-westerly direction to Tambo Quemado on the Chilean border.

After the confluence of Ruta 31 with Ruta 4 , the road leads along the right bank of the Río Pastara , until after 22 kilometers a dirt road branches off to the right in the direction of Caripe and reaches the village after 27 kilometers. The road then continues west past the Laguna Huana Kkota and the village of Sajama on to Tambo Quemado .

Due to the historical population development, the region has a high proportion of Aymara population, in the municipality of Curahuara 83.7 percent of the population speak the Aymara language .
