The Wolfsschlucht biotope comprises 0.4803 hectares of Klinge in the forest with natural accompanying vegetation, 20% of which is covered with a maple - ash canyon forest. Beeches are predominant ; Oaks and elms are found here and there. The rock biotope in the Wolfsschlucht forest covers 0.4266 hectares of natural open rock formation.

The geological object “Wolfschlucht” classified as worthy of protection includes the “approximately 200 m long and in places 20 m wide gorge”. It is a coral limestone formation ( White Jura ) that was formed around 160 million years ago - specifically Brachiopod limestone . The rock walls have a number of cavities. The canyon was formed by an earlier watercourse, today it is a dry karst area .

The gorge is a popular hiking destination with a barbecue area nearby.

The painter August Macke also chose the Wolfsschlucht as a motif when visiting family in Kandern.
