The woolly ash is a deciduous tree that reaches a height of 5 to 10 meters. In culture, the species usually grows as a shrub . The twigs are gray-yellow, glabrous or hairy. The terminal buds are brown and always longer than wide. The leaves are 10 to 15 centimeters long, composed and consist of five to seven sedentary or almost sedentary leaflets . The leaflets are bald or hairy on both sides, 5 to 8 inches long, oval to elliptical, pointed with a rounded or broadly wedge-shaped base. The leaf margin is clearly serrated. The flowers are hermaphroditic or unisexual. They are in terminal panicles . Petals are present. The flowers appear with the leaves from April to May. The fruits are 2 to 3 centimeters long, winged nuts with an elliptical cross-section , the wing edges of which run down more or less to the middle.

Distribution and ecology

There it thrives in cool, moist forests on well-drained, fresh to moist, acidic to neutral, sandy or gritty-humic, moderately nutrient-rich soils in sunny to light-shaded locations.
