Volodymyr Pawlowytsch Bjeljajew (* March 21st July / April 3,  1907 greg. [Different year of birth: 1909] in Kamjanez-Podilskyj , Podolia Governorate , Russian Empire ; † February 20, 1990 in Moscow , Soviet Union ) was a Soviet writer , screenwriter and journalist .

Life

Volodymyr Bjeljajew published his first work in 1923, and in 1936 he became a professional writer. From 1931 on he was a member of the CPSU (b) . He took part in the Great Patriotic War as a soldier in the Red Army . After the war he lived in Lviv and returned to work as a writer. In 1960 he moved to Moscow, where he died in 1990 at the age of 82 and was buried there in the Trojekurovo cemetery .

He achieved fame with his trilogy "The Old Castle" ( "Старая Крепость" ), written from 1937 to 1951, about the life of a boy in Kamyanets-Podilskyj during the Russian Civil War , for which he received the Stalin Prize in 1952 . In 1975 he received the State Prize of the Ukrainian SSR with the Taras Shevchenko Prize for the film "Until the Last Minute" ( "До останньої хвилини" ) together with Valery Issakov , Wladislav Dworschezki and Valerija Saklunna-Myronenko .
