Volodymyr Iwanowytsch Sokalskyj (born May 6, 1863 in Heidelberg , † 1919 in Sevastopol ) was a Ukrainian classical composer , pianist and music critic . His pseudonym was Don Diez .

Life

Volodymyr Sokalskyj came as the son of the economist and statistician Ivan Petrowytsch Sokalskyj (1830-1896) in German Heidelberg to the world. In 1885 he graduated from the Law Faculty of Kharkiv University and then studied piano at the Kharkov Music Academy of the Russian Music Society . He learned music history and theory autodidactically.

Sokalskyj worked as a professional teacher, pianist and conductor. He worked as a répétiteur at the Kharkiv Opera and conducted concerts of his works. From 1882 on he worked as a correspondent for a Kharkiv newspaper which also published his " Музыкальные заметки " ( sheet music ). He died in Sevastopol in the Crimea in 1919 .

His works include several symphonies, including the Symphony in G minor (1892), which continued the best traditions of the Ukrainian symphony of the 19th century. In 1900 he also wrote the children's opera " Ріпка " ( Ripka ) , based on a Ukrainian folk tale . He also composed choral music, piano pieces and more.
