The Woltzetener Kirche is the Evangelical Reformed church in the East Frisian town of Woltzeten in the Krummhörn from 1727.

history

The church history of Woltzeten is only incompletely known, as the church records can only be found completely from 1780. In the Middle Ages Woltzeten belonged to the Groothusen provost in the diocese of Münster . The name of the clergyman "her Wydzald", which was "kerchere to Waltzeten", has been handed down from 1461. A bell was cast by Gert Powels in Emden in 1593, and an even older bell had the name "Caterina sancta" in Gothic letters.

The church was built in a simple style in 1727 and replaced the previously existing larger church, which was demolished in 1725 due to dilapidation. This probably dates back to the 12th century. Although it always belonged to the Canum parish , the older of the churches was spiritually served by the nearby Blauhaus monastery near Woltzeten. In the course of the Reformation , the “Blauhaus” monastery was dissolved and parish work was taken over by the Canum parish. Even today the parish of Woltzeten is united with the parish of Canum under one rectory.

Building description

The church is a simple brick building in the Baroque style . The sides of the building were not plastered. Plaster and white paint were only applied to the front. Four large round-arched windows are inserted into the long sides . A clock is attached to the western top of the gable and the western entrance has a classicistic design. The building is designed without a church tower and only has a bell over the main entrance.

A free-standing belfry in the south of the church is significantly older than the church building and indicates the existence of the older church. The bell was cast in 1813 by Andries Heero van Bergen and Claudius Fremy from the metal of the predecessor from 1593. During the Second World War, the small medieval bell, which had previously become unusable due to a crack, was delivered and melted down.

Furnishing

The interior is essentially from 1833 when a major renovation was carried out. A fragment of a baptismal font made of Bentheim sandstone has been preserved from the previous building. This basin is dated around 1200 and is decorated with three friezes . In 1956 Alfred Führer created the small organ positive with five stops on a manual and pedal. The sub-bass 16 ′ in the pedal was taken over from the previous instrument by P. Furtwängler & Hammer , who built the church's first organ in 1907. The Vasa Sacra includes a communion cup from the pre-Reformation period.
