history

The museum opened in Miami in 2005 in a 600 m² Art Deco house in Miami Beach. The museum is located on Washington Avenue near the Lincoln Road shopping street and only two blocks from world famous Ocean Drive . The museum has consisted entirely of exhibits by the collector Naomi Wilzig since the beginning. In the early years of museum activity, she had to contend with great reservations both in the city's public opinion and among the responsible politicians. After a few years of intensive exhibition activity, the WEAM is now the most important erotic museum in the world and an indispensable part of the art scene in Miami. The collaboration with the museum's art director, Helmut Schuster, made international exchange exhibitions possible from 2012. In 2012 the museum showed, among other things, a solo exhibition by Helmut Newton . The World Erotic Art Museum showed both its own collection and temporary exhibitions from the start. A constantly growing scientific library on the subject of erotic art and a museum shop are also attached to the museum.

Exhibitions

The WEAM has been showing quarterly solo exhibitions on erotic art since 2005. The aim of the museum is from the beginning to buy exhibits after the exhibitions in order to be part of the collective memory of the visitors but also of the city of Miami. In 2007 the World Erotic Art Museum hosted a comprehensive exhibition of all of Rembrandt's known erotic etchings . The year 2008 was the main theme of Pin Up with solo exhibitions by Bruno Bernard and Bunny Yeager .

Until the end of March 2013, the museum showed a solo exhibition by the photographer Helmut Newton . This exhibition was a cooperation between WEAM Miami and the Museum der Moderne in Salzburg . Its curators were Veit Ziegelmayer, the director of the MDM Salzburg collection, and Helmut Schuster, the artistic director of WEAM.

Exhibits

The collection includes more than 4000 erotic works of art. The collection ranges from Chinese Shunga books to erotic African art and etchings by Rembrandt to paintings, sculptures and drawings of classical modernism. Artists such as Picasso , Miro and Botero are represented here. The contemporaries are represented by artists such as Robert Mapplethorpe , Bruno Bernard , Helmut Newton and Bunny Yeager. Since the beginning of her collecting activity, Ms. Wilzig had also added erotic kitsch to recognized art - bizarre exhibits such as the phallus from the Stanley Kubrick film Clockwork Orange round off the collection.
