Wouter Crabeth or "Wouter van der Gou" alias de "Almanack"

Wouter Pietersz. II. Crabeth (* around 1593 / 94 in Gouda , † 18th June 1644 in Gouda) was a Dutch painter.

Wouter Pietersz. II. Crabeth. was a member of the famous Crabeth family of painters and glass painters . He was a son of the lay judge and mayor Pieter Crabeth, who in turn was the son of the important glass painter Wouter Crabeth . He was trained by Cornelis Ketel in Gouda (uncle of the better known Cornelis Ketel the young in Amsterdam ) and probably by Abraham Bloemaert in Utrecht .

From 1613 he made an extensive trip to France and Italy . In 1615 he stayed in Paris , in 1616 in Aix-en-Provence and from 1619 in Rome, where he met Leonaert Bramer . In 1626 he returned to Gouda, where he became a member of the vigilante in the same year. In 1628 he married Adriana Gerritsdr. Vroesen, the daughter of one of the mayors of Gouda. Around the same time he was commissioned to paint two altarpieces for the Catholic Church of St. Jan Baptist and the religious community Catharinagasthuis, which are now in the Museum Het Catharina Gasthuis in Gouda and in the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam. Both panels, an Assumption of Mary and an unbeliever Thomas, show strong Italian influences and are close to the art of Caravaggio . In 1631 and 1641 two more altarpieces followed for the Church of St. Jan Baptist, which are now in the same museum.

In addition to altarpieces, he mainly painted genre scenes with card players and shepherds, which are entirely in the spirit of Caravaggio. Most of these works were probably created shortly after his return to Gouda. Only a few works have survived. Johannis Adriaensz is one of his students . Duif and Dirk de Vrije . He was the most important artist that Gouda produced in the 17th century.
