Cornelis Ketel
Cornelis Ketel (born March 18, 1548 in Gouda , † August 8, 1616 in Amsterdam ) was an important Dutch portrait , allegory and history painter , architect , sculptor and author . His work can be assigned to late Mannerism .
Life
The son of GJ Van Proyen enjoyed his education with his uncle Cornelis Jacobsz Ketel († 1568) and around 1565 with Anthonie van Blocklandt (1533 / 34–1583) in Delft .
In 1566 he stayed in Paris and Fontainebleau , where he was influenced by the artists of the Fontainebleau school . Two years later his presence in his hometown Gouda is documented, from 1573 to 1581 he worked in London . There he portrayed Queen Elizabeth I and several members of the English nobility and presumably met the Italian painter Federico Zuccari (1542–1609). He then stayed in Amsterdam before moving back to Gouda in 1590.
Cornelis Ketel died in Amsterdam in 1616 at the age of 68.
He was one of the teachers of Dirck Barendsz (1534–1592).

Cornelis Ketel created complex allegories that are now lost, but are known from Karel van Mander's descriptions and engravings, such as the allegory of human nature in the Amsterdam Rijksprentenkabinett, which was engraved from one of his works .
However, he distinguished himself above all as a portraitist and is mentioned as the first artist who created group pictures in the Elizabethan era , such as those later painted by Frans Hals . In the field of history painting, he is one of the main figures of late Mannerism alongside Hendrick Goltzius (1558–1616) and Cornelis van Haarlem (1562–1638).

Cornelis Ketel was also named as the alleged author of this work in connection with the so-called Ashbourne portrait kept in the Folger Shakespeare Library in Washington DC , but the monogram on which this hypothesis is based has not yet been identified, so it is insufficient documented attribution must be met with corresponding skepticism.
