Paraskevi ( Greek Παρασκευή ) is a Greek female given name .

Origin and meaning

Agia Paraskevi, a martyrdom scene by Michail Damaskinos in Venetian style, icon from the 16th century (Paul and Alexandra Canellopoulos Museum, Athens )

The Greek word Paraskevi (Παρασκευή) literally means “preparation” as the day of preparation for the Sabbath , ie “Friday”. It is often mistakenly assumed that the first name thus refers to Good Friday . However, this means the preparation for every Sunday, the “Lord's Day”, since traditionally on Friday the “preparation” for the Sunday mass and the associated festival began on Saturday.

The name Paraskevi can refer to several saints , some of which are celebrated by both the Catholic and the Orthodox Church : (Greek: Αγία Παρασκευή, Aghia Paraskevi; Albanian : Shën Premte; Bulgarian : Света Петка Параскевараске Paraskeva; Macedonian : Света Петка, Sveta Petka; Romanian : Sfânta Cuvioasă Parascheva; Russian : Святая Параскева-Пятница, St. Paraskeva-Friday; Serbian : Светаeta евака Pareva Pareva).

The hagiographic tradition of Saint Paraskevi is rich and complex. The relative sources are varied, but on the one hand they are not considered entirely reliable, on the other hand the existence of the saints is uncertain. The confusion in identifying the saints has been linked to traditions of saints of the same name from the 2nd century, whose fates were often confused, if not mixed. These are Paraskeva Pyatnitsa , Paraskeva of Rome and Veneranda of Gaul .

Short forms or nicknames of Paraskevi are Petka , Paraskeva , Praskovia , Praskovie , Pyatnitsa , Pyetka , Paraskevoula , Parascheva , Paraschiva , Voula , Vivi and Evi . In the German-speaking countries, the "Germanized" version Parachcewulla (short form: Wulla ) has meanwhile spread.
