Type : Beaded sludge needle
Scientific name

( Clessin , 1877)

The beaded sludge needle ( Platyla callostoma ) is a land-dwelling snail from the family of the sludge needles (Aciculidae) in the order of the Architaenioglossa ("old bandworm").

features

The small, conical housing of the beaded sludge needle are 2.8 to 3.6 mm high and 1.05 to 1.30 mm wide. They have 5¼ to 6 (up to 7) slightly arched, slowly and regularly increasing turns. The seam is moderately deep, there is no suture thread or an edge under the seam. The last deal is less than the total height. The mouth rises a little with the penultimate turn. In the frontal view the mouth is crooked pear-shaped (height of the mouth: 0.90 to 1.05 mm; width of the mouth 0.60 to 0.75 mm). In the side view, the mouth edge is almost straight; only at the seam is a very small sinulus developed. The edge of the mouth is enlarged. In the mouth there is a distinct parietal callus and angularis. The umbilical callus is small and thin and tends to narrow towards the middle of the parietal margin. The well-developed neck bulge often protrudes beyond the edge of the mouth when viewed from the front of the mouth. In the side view it is highest in the middle to behind the middle and slopes slightly concavely on the back. It is always clearly limited. The housing is yellowish brown, the surface is smooth and shiny.

Similar species

The bulging sludge needle differs from the geographically closest Platyla species, Platyla cryptomena , in that it has a slightly larger, less slender and more yellowish-brown housing. The latter species also has a slightly wider but flatter neck bulge. The housing of the brown sludge needle ( Platyla fusca ) is also larger. In the case of Platyla dupuyi , the neck bulge is missing, and the smooth needle ( Platyla polita ) has more curved whorls. In addition, the neck bulge is narrower and lower than that of the bulging rag needle. In addition, an edge is usually formed below the seam in this type. The housing of Platyla pezzolii is slimmer; this species has a higher but narrower neck bulge.

Geographical distribution, occurrence and way of life

The area of the species is divided into two parts. A distribution center is in the Eastern Pyrenees, mainly in the Spanish part, but the type locality is in the French part of the Eastern Pyrenees. The second center is in the Cantabrian Mountains (Spain). The shells of the western population are on average somewhat smaller and slimmer. The neck bulge is also a bit narrower on average, has the highest point in the middle and falls more straight, not concave, towards the back.

The animals live in the deciduous and soil litter of moist deciduous forests, often near flowing water and often under ivy.

Taxonomy

The taxon was established by Stephan Clessin in 1911 as Acme callostoma . The genus Acme Hartmann, 1821 was placed on the Official Index of Rejected and Invalid Species by the International Commission on Zoological Nomenclature. Later the species was mostly described under the name Acicula (Platyla) callostoma . Platyla is now a generally recognized independent genus. The Fauna Europaea has no synonyms.
