The genus platyla is a genus of the family of aciculidae (Aciculidae) from the order of architaenioglossa . With 25 recent and six fossil species, Platyla is the most species-rich genus of the Mulmnadeln; it has been known since the Bartonian period (41.3 to 38) ( Palaeogene ). The recent species Platyla polita (Hartmann, 1840) has been known since the Miocene; the recent housings of this type cannot be distinguished from the fossil ones.

features

The cases of the representatives of the genus Platyla vary from 1.15 to 5.6 mm in height and 0.4 to 1.9 mm in width (thickness). They are highly conical to almost cylindrical with up to eight whorls. They are always more than twice as high as they are wide. They are smooth and shiny with a few isolated streaks of growth, only Platyla lusitanica has more clearly developed streaks. A seam edge is present, but differently clearly formed. Some species have a neck bulge, the shape of which is intraspecificly very variable. It is usually strongest at the base of the case.

The translucent, whitish body is comparatively small, slim and short in relation to the housing. The head is set off from the neck by a groove that runs diagonally to the edge of the sole. The snout can be extended far forward. The thread-like feelers are long and can be retracted completely. The eyes are at the base of the antennae. The sole is separated from the body by a weaker and a stronger longitudinal furrow. The lid on the back of the foot is quite large and has 2½ to 2¾ whorls.

The animals are of separate sex. The comparatively few eggs laid by the females are very large in relation to their body size.

Similar genera

The casings of the Platyla types are smooth. The cases of the other genera of the Mulmnadeln have a clearly distinctive sculpture.

Geographical distribution, occurrence and way of life

The species of the genus come from the Iberian Peninsula in the west across Central Europe, the Balkan Peninsula to western Ukraine and Asia Minor. In the north, the area extends to northern Germany.

The oldest known species of the genus Platyla is Platyla eocaena (Oppenheim, 1895) from the Bartonian ( Eocene , Paleogene ). The species is also the oldest species in the family of sludge needles.

Taxonomy and systematics

The taxon was established in 1856 by Alfred Moquin-Tandon . Type species is Acme dupuyi Paladilhe, 1868 by later determination by Welter Schultes (2012). A more recent synonym is:

  • Hyalacme P. Hesse 1917

Currently over 35 species are included in the genus Platyla :
