The Wuppertal Bridge (occasionally also Wuppertal Bridge and also Öhder Bridge ) is an approx. 420 m long and 38 m high motorway bridge on the federal motorway 1 (A 1). The steel composite bridge standing on six support pillars is 23.3 m wide.

The bridge spans the Wupper valley in the Wuppertal district of Langerfeld-Beyenburg in the district of Öhde . The A1 follows the valley of the Blombach from the south to its confluence below the Wuppertal bridge in the Wupper.

In the valley, on the left side of the Wuppertal, the state road 58 (former federal road 51 ) runs. Below the bridge, the name of the state road changes from Lenneper Straße to Blombacher Bach . Landesstraße 527 runs on the right side of Wuppertal. This street also changes its name below the bridge from Öhder Straße to Beyenburger Straße . A short cross connection (state road 420, extension of the Blombacher Bach road ) connects both traffic routes across the river. Furthermore, the Wuppertal Railway, which was closed for passenger traffic in 1979, crosses under the bridge. The Öhde stop was under the bridge.

In 2004 and 2005, as part of the widening of the A 1 to six lanes, a second bridge with the same appearance was built next to the old Wuppertal Bridge, which now accommodates four (three lanes , one hard shoulder in each direction) of the eight future lanes. Built in 1956-1959 prestressed concrete - girder bridge was dismantled from August 2008 to August 2009, including pillars and was replaced from 2010 to 2012 by a new building. The two structurally separate, but without spacing, new bridges together form the new Wuppertal Bridge.

During this time, the roads running through the valley floor were closed. The cost of the demolition was calculated by the state road construction company NRW in November 2007 at four million euros. In July 2008, four and a half million euros were assumed.

New building

The second new bridge construction began in spring 2010. It was built using a steel composite construction and is a total of 418.3 meters long and around 30 meters high. The construction time for the 20 million euro investment was estimated to be two years. In September 2012, the second half of the bridge with the three lanes was released.
