Xanthe Terra ( Latin for golden yellow land; named 1979) is a large highland region on Mars .
description
The area extends on both sides of the equator, from the lowland Chryse Planitia in the north to the Mariner valleys in the south. At its widest point, it measures 2,456 km. Cartographically, the region is partly in the southeast of the Lunae Palus - Gradfeld , in the southwest of the Oxia Palus - Gradfeld , in the northeast of the Coprates - Gradfeld and in the northwest of the Margaritifer Sinus - Gradfeld.
Images of spacecraft Mars Express , Mars Global Surveyor and the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter show former river valleys and deltas . The deltas consist of several thin layers, similar to the structure of those on Earth .
