Xavier de Fourvières

Xavier de Fourvières , born Albert Rieux (born February 5, 1853 in Robion , Département Vaucluse , † October 27, 1912 in Robion) was a French Premonstratensian , Provençalist and Romanist .

life and work

Albert Rieux had an awakening experience in Notre-Dame de Fourvière (other spelling: Fourvières) in 1874 and joined the Premonstratensians of the Abbey of Saint-Michel-de-Frigolet . In 1878 he made perpetual vows as brother Xavier de Fourvières (or de Fourvière), Provencal: Savié de Fourviero (or Xavièr de Forvièra, depending on the orthography chosen). He was enthusiastic about Provençal, preached successfully in this officially despised language, published a grammar and a dictionary of Provençal (which have been reissued to this day), wrote works in Provencal / Occitan language and became a member (majoral) of Félibrige . As a result of the separation of church and state , he spent the years 1903 to 1912 as prior in Storrington, Horsham (District) . He founded Lou Gau magazine . A street in Avignon was named after him.
