action

Liu Cheng works as a cook in a small town in the south of the People's Republic of China. His 13-year-old son Xiaochun is considered a violin prodigy in the area. To give him a career, Liu Cheng takes him to Beijing to take part in a children's talent competition. Since he is without financial influence, Xiaochun is only admitted fifth in the competition and not admitted to the conservatory. With the unconditional determination to make a career as a violinist possible for Xiaochun, Cheng persuades the eccentric Professor Jiang to give his son private lessons. Cheng earns the necessary money for tuition and living as a day laborer with various jobs.

Xiaochun meets the attractive Lili in the neighborhood, who likes his violin playing. She lives on rich men with whom she dates. However, her friend Hui cheats on her and more or less lives off her.

Xiaochun's violin lessons with Professor Jiang are less characterized by strict practice than by general housework and the teaching of life wisdom. Jiang admits that he cannot help Xiaochun to a career because he himself is in a crucial position without influence. Instead, Liu Chen can persuade the high-profile conservatory professor Yu Shifeng with the true story of Xiaochun, who is actually a foundling, to teach his boy. But the day he introduced his son to the professor, he had sold his violin and with the money bought a fur coat for Lili, whom he wanted to console over Hui with.

Professor Yu recognizes the boy's talent and feeling for music and encourages him to the detriment of his other student Lin Yu. When he prefers it to her for an appearance at an international competition, the jealous girl Xiaochun reveals that Professor Yu has secretly bought his violin in order to turn his thoughts away from the instrument, which it believed to be lost. Xiaochun grabs his violin and runs to the train station, where Liu Chen was about to leave and go back to his small town. Xiaochun chooses him and against fame and success.
