Cynthia M. Beall

Cynthia M. Beall (* 1949 ) is an American anthropologist and human biologist at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland , Ohio . She is considered to be a leader in research into the influence of life at high altitudes - especially the lack of oxygen ( hypoxia ) - on human nature and culture.

Live and act

Beall studied biology at the University of Pennsylvania ( Bachelor 1970) and anthropology at Pennsylvania State University ( Master 1972). She earned a Ph.D. from Pennsylvania State University in 1976. in anthropology. She has been teaching at Case Western Reserve University since 1976 , initially as an assistant professor and from 1982 as an associate professor . In 1987 she received a full professorship. Since 1994 she has held the S. Idell Pyle professorship for anthropology and since 1995 an additional professorship for anatomy . Since 2004 she has also been doing research for the Cleveland Museum of Natural History . Since 2016 (until 2020) she has been a member of the Board of Directors of the American Association for the Advancement of Science .

Together with Melvyn Goldstein , Beall examined the influence of life at high altitude on human physiology and on the socio-cultural behavior of people living under these conditions. For this purpose, she examined populations in Tibet , the Andes and the highlands of Abyssinia . She was able to prove that the adaptation of the inhabitants of the Tibetan highlands is different from that of the Andean inhabitants. She made important contributions to quantitative genetics , selection and genomics .
