Xiongguanlong was a basal tyrannosauroid that was described in2009. The only species is Xiongguanlong baimoensis . The genus was named after the city of Jiayuguan , which is nearby. Xiong Guan is her old name, long stands for dragon . The specific epithet baimoensis after a rock formation nearby. Xiongguanlong lived at the end of the Lower Cretaceous 125 to 100 million years ago.

The holotype with the catalog number FRDC-GS JB16-2-1 consists of a complete but deformed skull without a lower jaw, the vertebrae with the exception of the cervical vertebrae, a partially preserved right iliac bone and the right femur .

features

Since the holotype's bone sutures are almost completely closed, it must be a fully-grown specimen. The weight of the living specimen is estimated at 272 kilograms. The body height was about two meters. This made Xiongguanlong a medium-sized tyrannosauroid.

Xiongguanlong , similar to Alioramus , had a low, long skull and a narrow, long snout that was more than two-thirds the length of the skull. As with the late Cretaceous tyrannosauroids, the skull behind the snout region is laterally widened and about twice as wide as the snout.

The intermaxillary bone was short and as high as it was long. It had four teeth which, unlike other Tyrannosauroidea such as Dilong , Eotyrannus , Gorgosaurus and full-grown specimens of Tyrannosaurus, were unsawed. The upper jaw was long and low. In the better preserved left upper jaw there are 15 bony tooth sockets.

Systematics

Xiongguanlong is the sister taxon of the Tyrannosauridae plus Appalachiosaurus .
