Xonotic is a free , platform-independent first-person shooter . The project is a spin-off from Nexuiz and, like this one, is based on the DarkPlaces game engine , a further development of the Quake engine . The style of play is based on Unreal Tournament and Quake , supplemented by some in-house developments.

Overview

The game offers 16 different game variants, including the popular modes Capture the Flag , Deathmatch and "Assault", as well as more special ones, as well as in-house developments such as "Key Hunt" or "Freeze Tag". In order to achieve victory, the player can choose from up to 18 different, futuristic weapons. Since the players move at high speed, can jump high and have fast-firing weapons, the gaming experience is comparatively fast. A major focus of the game is on game physics and movement control, as acceleration, enormously high jumps and reaching seemingly unreachable levels are key aspects of the game. Classic techniques such as “strafe jumping”, “bunny hopping”, “ramp jumping” and similar tricks are used, but the thrust of weapon explosions can also be used for both horizontal and vertical acceleration. In addition to the game physics, the weapons also offer tactical elements that can be used by experienced players. For example, the rocket launcher's rockets can be steered and detonated remotely, the scattering particles of the “Crylink” can be bundled onto the enemy through clever timing, or explosions can be caused by combining the secondary and primary functions of the “Electro” weapon.

The game world is set in the science fiction realm, including space scenarios, advanced technology, alien-like player models and other genre-typical elements. Influences from other titles, e.g. B. the Halo series, Tron and others are recognizable. The developer community has bound itself to this concept with strict restrictions in order to be able to deliver a consistent result. The predecessor Nexuiz was criticized in places that this was not the case.

According to the developers, the graphic quality compared to commercial titles is at the level between 2006 and 2007. Graphic representations using techniques such as Bloom, Real Time World and Dynamic Lighting and shadows, shader support (with OpenGL 2.0), offset mapping, motion Blur and high dynamic range rendering are offered.

background

In March 2010, a difference of opinion arose over the licensing of the name Nexuiz to the commercial game studio IllFonic with the aim of developing a commercial console version of the open-source first-person shooter Nexuiz. The CryEngine 3 from Crytek was used for this. The game is available for the Xbox Live and PlayStation game consoles . The originator of the original game Nexuiz, Lee Vermeulen, had sold the naming rights without consulting or informing the then (voluntary) developers and the gaming community. Since this development came as a complete surprise for the gaming community and the developers, and they were annoyed by the one-sided monetization of the jointly established name Nexuiz, the Xonotic project was started.

About nine months after the spin-off, Xonotic's source code was published via Git. A preview version was published on December 23, 2010. Version 0.5 followed on September 8, 2011, which, in addition to numerous bug fixes, included support for vehicles, multiple languages, better artificial intelligence, an improved weapon balance and seven new levels. On March 8, 2012, the developers released version 0.6 with additional new levels, new weapon models, global, optionally anonymous player statistics and a sandbox system.
