Jad Mordechai ( Hebrew יד מרדכי - "Monument Mordechais") is a kibbutz in southern Israel , near Ashkelon and the border with the Gaza Strip .

history

The kibbutz was founded in 1943 ; it was named after the leader of the Warsaw Ghetto uprising, Mordechaj Anielewicz . A museum deals with the ghetto uprising.

An important role is played Yad Mordechai in Israel's War of Independence (also called "Palestine War") in 1948. The residents of the town succeeded in a Advancing hostile Egyptian battalion with 15 times the head thickness for five days, stopping from 24 to 29 May 1948 and finally to withdraw. Meanwhile, the Israeli troops had time to regroup. An installation commemorates this struggle.

Life in the kibbutz

Volunteers in Jad Mordechai

The Kibbutz Jad Mordechai is jointly managed. The kibbutz is self-sustaining from its agricultural profits. The partner is the Carmel Agricultural Cooperative . Oranges, avocados and grapefruits are mainly grown. The adults live in small houses, the children live day and night in the children's house. The families only see each other by the hour. We eat together in the dining room. Every adult only gets pocket money for his or her work. On the edge of the kibbutz located Volunteerscamp , with volunteers from around the world.

traffic

railroad

Under the name of the Arab village Dair as-Sinaid , Jad Mordechai had a station on the Sinai Railway from Beirut via Lod to Cairo from 1916 until the section in question was closed in the 1970s or 1980s (until 1967). Today, most of the railroad tracks in the Gaza Strip have been dismantled, the station buildings are still standing.
