Yanbuʿ al-Bahr ( Arabic ينبع البحر, DMG Yanbuʿ al-Baḥr  'source by the sea'), also known as Yanbu , Yambo , or Yenbo is an important port on the Red Sea , in the province of Medina in western Saudi Arabia . The city is located about 350 kilometers north of Jeddah and has 188,430 inhabitants (as of 2004, census).

The city itself is divided into three regions, each about 15 minutes away by car. The city itself, often called "al-Balad", is home to most of the residential areas and shopping centers. In addition, Yanbuʿ an-Nachil (also Al-Nakheel ) is a relatively old area, which consists almost entirely of agricultural land. The third region is the industrial area Yanbuʿ as-Sinaʿiyya (roughly "the industrial Yanbu"), which has been built in very new and modern architecture since around 1975. All refineries and petrochemical plants are located here, this region is still growing very quickly.

history

The story of Yanbuʿ al-Bahr begins around 2500 years ago as an important base on the Incense Route between Yemen and Egypt and the Mediterranean .

In 1811, during the Ottoman-Saudi War, Ottoman troops landed here : the 70 Saudi defenders were unable to counter the 10,000 attackers.

During World War I , Yanbuʿ al-Bahr served as the base for the Arab and British troops in their struggle against the Ottoman Empire . Until 1975 the city remained a relatively small port; In 1975 the Saudi Arabian government decided to develop both Yanbuʿ al-Bahr and al-Jubail on the Persian Gulf into new industrial bases. In 1991 the population was around 40,000, in 2004 it was 188,430.

On 14 May 2019 the port was - at the same time pumping stations of the East-West pipeline - from Huthi - drones attacked.

economy

Yanbuʿ al-Bahr has an important port through which oil is shipped and also has three oil refineries, a plastics plant and other important petrochemical plants. Today it is the second most important port in Saudi Arabia and is also the important port for the holy city of Medina , which is about 160 kilometers to the east. The city's natural harbor is protected on both sides by coral reefs. Three large pipelines that bring oil from the oil fields to the east to the Red Sea end in Yanbuʿ al-Bahr; one of them is the east-west pipeline . The city also has a national airport and a naval base (air defense).

traffic

A new expressway connects Yanbu with Jeddah and the northern parts of the kingdom as well as the neighboring countries Syria and Jordan .
