geography

Prescott , the county seat of Yavapai County in the northeast, is around 45 kilometers away . Phoenix is around 100 kilometers to the southeast. The Arizona State Route 89 affected Yarnell in the east.

history

The name of the town was chosen in honor of Harrison Yarnell , who opened the Yarnell Mine in 1873. Gold and silver were found there and many people settled in the place. Around 1900 the mine could no longer be operated economically. Unlike many small surrounding settlements who were left then and now ghost towns ( Ghost towns ) are promoted in Yarnell some time copper and founded in the fertile area farms. When US Route 89 was paved in 1933, Yarnell was located on the important connecting road between Prescott and Phoenix and developed as a place for stopovers for travelers and, because of the favorable climate, also as a retirement home for retirees.

Yarnell Hill fire

The fire on Yarnell Hill in June 2013

On June 28, 2013, a lightning strike caused a forest and land fire known as the Yarnell Hill Fire , which spread rapidly due to strong winds. On June 30, 2013, a great tragedy occurred when 19 firefighters from an elite unit of the Granite Mountain Hotshot Team in Prescott who were fighting the fire were rolled over by a roller due to rotating winds and all lost their lives. Two memorials were erected to commemorate the firefighters who died.

The fire also reached the town of Yarnell. About half of the town's houses burned to the ground.

Demographic data

In 2010 a population of 649 people was determined, which means an increase of 0.6% compared to the year 2000. The average age of the residents in 2010 was 61.1 years, which is very much higher than the average for Arizona, which was 37.1 years and is also to be understood as an indication that predominantly pensioners live in the city and stay there after the end of the mining boom no or only a few modern industries have settled.
