Background and production

Ben & Tan after winning the Melodi Grand Prix

On January 20, 2020, the participants of the upcoming Melodi Grand Prix were presented to the public. Ben & Tan participated as a participant for the regions Sjælland , Copenhagen and Bornholm of the channel DRP4 . On January 24th, it was announced that the duo had qualified for the finals. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic , the Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen recommended not to hold events with more than 1,000 spectators on site, which is why the preliminary decision on March 7th took place completely without an audience. Ben & Tan appeared in second place and were accompanied by the DR SymfoniOrkestret and the Antonelli Orchestra. Both were able to qualify for the second round and won it with 61 percent of all votes cast.

Emil Lei produced and wrote the track with Linnea Deb and Jimmy Jonsson. Lei was already involved in the 2019 Danish contribution, Love Is Forever . Deb is the composer of the Grand Prix winning title Heroes and has already written several other titles with Jansson for ESC preliminary rounds.

Music and lyrics

The song should encourage the listener to affirm life and love even in difficult times or when they thwart their own plans. According to Benjamin Rosenbohm, the song is about the fact that there are sad and good, but unrealistic moments in love, which one must however accept.

»For me there are two types of love songs that I see in the Spotify top ten lists and hear on the radio: The ones that are totally sad, like“ You broke my heart, but I love you still. ”And those who paint a very unrealistic picture of what love really is. I think "Yes" is good at celebrating both things and accepting that both are real to people. "

- Benjamin Rosenbohm

The duet begins in the first stanza with the singing of Rosenbohm. After two lines he takes turns with Balcells. Most of the chorus is sung by both of them, the second verse by Rosenbohm. Instead, the performers only sing a few words together. The outro is sung completely by both. The instrumentation contains influences from country music .

At the Eurovision Song Contest

Denmark should have performed with this song in the second semifinals of the Eurovision Song Contest 2020. However, due to the advancing COVID-19 pandemic , the competition was canceled.

reception

After winning the Melodi Grand Prix, criticism was expressed that the title was a copy of P! Nks Walk Me Home them. This was rejected by the singers, although the song was used as an inspiration.

The fan blog Eurovisionary said it was unfortunate that the title was lost due to the cancellation of the Grand Prix. According to ESCXtra, the title is very radio-friendly and compared the style to Mumford & Sons . The German blog ESC Kompakt wrote: "Anyone who manages to perform like this in front of an empty hall really deserves the success." Other reviewers said that the song would not attract any further attention.

Publication and commercial success

The song was released as a music stream and download on March 8, 2020. The single also includes an acoustic version .
