Yiriza ( Greek Γύριζα Gýriza ) is an archaeological site on the plateau of the same name in Corinthia in Greece . The prehistoric finds come from the Early Helladic and Mycenaean times . About 400 m to the east is the archaeological site of Gonia and about 100 m to the east and about 150 m to the south-west of the church of Agios Athanasios, Mycenaean chamber tombs were found.

Description of the site

The limestone plateau is 1 km north of Examilia and 3.5 km east of Archea Korinthos . It is roughly in the shape of a rectangle of about 90 by 80 meters . Yiriza rises about 20 m above the plain and on all sides the terrain drops about 2 to 3 m steeply and the limestone is exposed here. Below it is surrounded on all sides by a flat embankment.

Excavations

During experimental excavations on the plateau in 1916 , Carl Blegen found a small early Helladic settlement. During these excavations he found five coils or pestles made of colored marble and early Helladic and early Cycladic household appliances and several Askoi . Mycenaean chamber tombs were found on the western slope . In 1979, during illegal building activity, another Mycenaean cemetery was discovered 100 m east of Gyriza, which probably belonged to the Mycenaean settlement on the Gonia plateau. The finds were secured during an emergency excavation, but the excavation report has not yet been published. Details were only given for three seal stones from grave 1. The tombs, which were dug into the soft rock, have a dromos , an entrance and a burial chamber. They date from the Early Mycenaean (SH IIA – IIB; 16th – 15th centuries BC) to the Middle Mycenaean period (SH IIIB; 13th century BC). The finds consist mainly of high quality ceramic vessels and various types of figures. They are exhibited in the Archaeological Museum of Isthmia .
