Catherine Morgan

Catherine Anne Morgan (born October 9, 1961 ) is a British Classical Archaeologist .

Catherine Morgan studied at Clare College of Cambridge University and was at 1986 Anthony Snodgrass with the work Settlement and exploitation in the region of the Corinthian Gulf, c.1000-700 BC doctorate . She was then a David Thomson Senior Research Fellow at Sidney Sussex College , Cambridge. In 1992 she became a lecturer at the Royal Holloway of the University of London and in 1997 moved to the same position at King's College London , where she became a reader , and finally, in 2005, professor of classical archeology.

From 2007 she was also the director of the British School at Athens and during this time she was visiting professor at the Australian Archaeological Institute at Athens in 2012 . In 2015 she was followed by John Bennet as director of the British School.

Since 2015 she has been a Senior Research Fellow at All Souls College and Professor of Classical Antiquity and Archeology at the University of Oxford . For her services, which brought her honorary membership in the Archaeological Society of Athens and the corresponding membership of the Archaeological Institute of America , she was appointed officer of the Order of the British Empire in 2012. In 2016 she was elected to the British Academy .

Her research focuses mainly on the Iron Age and the Archaic Period of Greece , especially in the area of ​​the Gulf of Corinth and the Ionian Islands . A significant part of her scientific work is devoted to the Greek religion, its shrines, festivals and rites, which also includes early Greek poetry. Regional studies , especially about Ithaca , the development of the Greek polis as well as the ancient ceramic production and its trade form further focal points.
