Anthony Snodgrass

Anthony Snodgrass (born July 7, 1934 in London ) is a British classical archaeologist .

Life

Anthony Snodgrass attended Marlborough College , served in the Royal Air Force and studied subsequently Classical Archeology and Ancient History at Worcester College of the University of Oxford . From 1961 he was a lecturer in Classical Archeology at Edinburgh University . In 1968 he was appointed reader, 1975 professor. Shortly thereafter, he moved to the University of Cambridge , where he was Laurence Professor of Classical Archeology from 1976 to 2001. Since his retirement he has been a Fellow of Clare College at the University of Cambridge.

In his research, Snodgrass combines methods from classical archeology and ancient history. His work on early Greece is of particular importance. His publications deal with various aspects of Greek cultural history, including the archaic state, settlement history and topography , handicrafts and armaments of antiquity.

Snodgrass is a member of the British Academy (since 1979, Vice President 1991–1992), the Society of Antiquaries of London and the German Archaeological Institute . In 1984–1985 he was a Sather Professor at the University of California, Berkeley . In 2009 he received an honorary doctorate from the University of Chicago .
