Yizhi Jane Tao

Yizhi Jane Tao is a Chinese biochemist and cell biologist who lives and works in the United States . She led the research team that first identified the structure of the nucleoprotein of influenza virus A at the atomic level, an achievement that received widespread press attention. In 2006, a consortium of leading Chinese media organizations ranked her among the ten most influential Chinese.

Yizhi Jane Tao joined in 1988 the "First Middle High School" ( Chinese  湖南省長沙市第一中學  /  湖南省长沙市第一中学 ) in Changsha , Hunan in China from. Since 1988 she has been studying at the University of Beijing , where she obtained her Bachelor of Science degree in biology in 1992 . In 1994 she went to Purdue University in West Lafayette , USA and worked in the group of the German-American biophysicist Michael Rossmann. There she obtained her doctorate in life sciences in 1999 with a thesis on structural virology . She completed her postdoctoral training in 2002 with Stephen C. Harrison at Harvard University in Cambridge (Massachusetts) .

In 2009 she went to Rice University in Houston , USA, where she made important contributions to research on influenza , hepatitis and Birnaviridae . She is a professor of biochemistry and cell biology.
