Carl Pietzner (born April 9, 1853 in Wriezen , Prussia , † November 25, 1927 in Vienna-Penzing ) was an Austrian photographer. At the turn of the century, he and Jan Langhans owned most of the photo studios in the area of the KuK monarchy, and numerous celebrity portraits were made by Pietzner.

Life

Carl Pietzner was already active as a photographer in the Harnecker studio in Wriezen in 1864. His work as a copyist and retoucher took him to Berlin , St. Petersburg and Moscow . Then he was an operator and managing director in Warsaw . In 1875 he became an Austrian citizen. He set up his first studio in Teplitz in 1877 . Several branches were soon established. From 1891 or 1892 he also had a studio in Vienna , from 1893 he was a court photographer , and in 1895 he moved to Vienna himself. By 1900 he owned about ten studios. Along with Wilhelm Perlmutter , he was one of the most important fashion photographers in Vienna around 1900. At times he employed more than 300 people. From 1904 he worked with Eduard Bertel in Salzburg after the two had taken over the studio from Friedrich Würthle junior. In 1909 he became Imperial Councilor. In 1911 a branch was established in Karlsbad . During the First World War , in which he or perhaps his son of the same name was supposed to document developments on the Eastern Front, Pietzner speculated. Apparently he then ran into financial difficulties. For these reasons he finally committed suicide by poisoning himself with light gas in his Vienna apartment .

Carl Pietzner's son took over his father's Vienna studio together with Georg Fayer .

Carl Pietzner was the inventor of relief photography, which he patented in 1898. Braille was later developed from this technique in the USA .

Pietzner retouched a photograph of Empress Elisabeth by Ludwig Angerer in order to reconstruct her approximate appearance at the time of her murder. Sisi herself had not had her picture taken from around the age of 30.
