Yony ​​Leyser

Jonathan "Yony" Leyser (* 1985 in DeKalb , Illinois ) is an American film director living in Berlin .

Life

Leyser was born to Yona Leyser ( professor at Northern Illinois University ) and Ayala Leyser (psychologist at Elgin Mental Health Center ). His parents called him by both his first name and his Hebrew name Yony . He later used this as a stage name .

He went to Chicago at the Art Academy for secondary school and participated in many theater classes. He also took part in various theater productions. As a teenager he played in the play Hotel On Marvin Gardens of Nagle Jackson on the side of Cecily Strong .

He studied film and journalism at the New School in New York City . During his student days he spent six months in Lawrence , where he worked as a music journalist for The Kansan and as a reporter for Vice magazine .

Leyer organized a re-enactment of the 1968 National Democratic Assembly . He played the role of Beat poet Allen Ginsberg , who nominated a rooster for president and a chicken for vice president . In 2007 he began shooting his first documentary about William S. Burroughs "A Man Within", which he completed in 2008. In 2014 he was the protagonist in the documentary How I Learned to Love Numbers by Oliver Sechting and Max Taubert.

In the winter semester 2017/2018 taught Leyser at the University of Design in Offenbach .

Leyser moved to Berlin in 2010. He defines himself as homosexual and sees his work as a form of queer activism .
