Yoo Teo (born April 11, 1981 in Cologne , Germany ) is a South Korean actor .

Life

Yoo Teo, also known under the western name sequence Teo Yoo, was born on April 11, 1981 as the son of South Korean guest workers in Cologne . He was a passionate basketball player in his youth, but gave up after an injury and focused on acting. To do this, he went to the Lee Strasberg Theater and Film Institute in New York . Yoo is fluent in English, German and Korean. He played in productions in different countries. Early in his career he had several supporting roles in South Korean films, including One on One (2014) directed by Kim Ki-duk .

In 2015 he played one of the leading roles in the American production Seoul Searching by Korean-American director Benson Lee. The film is about young Koreans who grew up abroad and want to learn about their Korean heritage. Yoo plays the Hamburger Klaus Kim in it . He also starred in the science fiction film Equals , the Vietnamese film Bitcoin Heist (2016) and the Thai film Ruk Kong Rao (2017).

In 2018 he played the lead role of the Soviet rock musician Viktor Zoi , son of a Korean and a Russian, in Kirill Serebrennikov's Leto , which led him to the competition at the Cannes International Film Festival . Yoo doesn't speak Russian and has learned the Russian texts by heart for the role.

Yoo said he sees himself as a Korean and has always wanted to appear in South Korean films, but his Korean has not been fluent for a long time. 2019 he plays the lead role in the film Vertigo on the side of Chun Woo-hee .
